The law firm of Moore & Van Allen PLLC now occupies the historic Kress building at 78 Wentworth St. in downtown Charleston, offering more than 25,000 square feet of office space to accommodate its clients, attorneys and staff. It was at 40 Calhoun St.

The office will provide 80 individual work spaces, a rooftop terrace, numerous conference rooms, a reception area and designated client entrance. The first floor will remain for retail use.

Kress & Company played such a significant role in the economic development of our city as well as our nation, and we have the utmost respect and appreciation for the structure in which they staked their claim on the Charleston market,” Moore & Van Allen management committee member Don Meyer said. “We greatly value the building’s location in the heart of downtown Charleston, and look forward to working and hosting clients and colleagues in our new space.”

The Kress Department Store building was originally constructed in the 1930s for use as a 5-10-25 Cent Store and is protected by a conservation easement donated to the Historic Charleston Foundation.

It was restored to update the space to ensure full business functionality and improve energy efficiency while respecting the building’s original art deco architecture and causing minimal disruption to its existing trademark core and shell.
