A decorated marine will speak at The Citadel tonight about post-traumatic stress disorder and how it affects both combat soldiers returning from war zones and law enforcement officers here at home.
Richard Brewer has 17 years of experience as a police officer and is a trained FBI hostage negotiator. He will speak on campus in Byrd Hall at 6:30 p.m.
PTSD is a mental health issue “that can occur after someone goes through a traumatic event like war, assault, or disaster,” according to The National Center for PTSD.
The Center estimates as many as 8 percent of the total population will experience an episode of PTSD at some point in their lives.
