Volunteer firefighter dies in wreck near Ridgeville on his way to a fire

A volunteer firefighter on his way to a forest fire was killed when his truck went off the road near Ridgeville today.

Michael Louis Broz, 58, of Ridge Road in Ridgeville died at the scene, Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet said. Broz was on his way to a fire in Beidler Forest when he wrecked on the curve on Horseford Road just before the bridge, Nisbet said.

A 1977 Ford pickup was traveling west on Horseford Road when the truck ran off the left side of the road and hit a tree about 4:30 p.m., killing the driver, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The driver was the only occupant and was wearing a seat belt, according to the Highway Patrol.
