March 16: Palmetto Pump & USA Climbing Competition at James Island County Park. 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Witness a competition of strength, balance and endurance from some of the region’s best climbers at the Palmetto Pump & USA Climbing Competition. Any competitor is welcome to register; no competition experience is necessary. Space is limited so register early and save. Registration fees: $40 before March 4; $45 on or after March 4. March 24: Customer Appreciation Day at Charleston County Parks. Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission says “thank you” by offering free gate admission to Ravenel Caw Caw Interpretive Center, North Charleston Wannamaker, Mount Pleasant Palmetto Islands and James Island county parks. Take advantage of free parking at Kiawah Beachwalker Park and Isle of Palms County Park, as well as the Folly Beach Edwin S. Taylor Fishing Pier, where fishing is also free for the day. The Mount Pleasant Pier will offer complimentary fishing March 24, but parking fees still apply. Visit ccprc.com for details on free events and giveaways at each park.

March 7: Murder Mystery: Mama Mia it’s a Murder! at James Island County Park. 5:30-8 p.m. Antonio has been found murdered in his pizzeria. We need your help to find out who did it. Special needs participants and their family and friends are invited to enjoy an evening of pizza, mystery and fun. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. March 8: Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve Bird Walk. 8:30-10:30 a.m. Birding experts help participants explore the surprisingly diverse north end of Folly Beach. Seek out a variety of songbirds, shorebirds and seabirds. The program is free. Registration is not required. A chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 12 & up. Fee: Free

March 9, 13, 16, 20, 23, 27, 30: Early Morning Bird Walks at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. The walk through many distinct habitats will allow group to view and discuss a variety of birds, butterflies and other organisms. Walk-in registrations are welcome. A chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Fee: $5/Free for Gold Pass Holders.

March 9: Carolina Blues program. Meets at CCPRC Headquarters. 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Experiment with Carolina Indigo and examine the history behind the dye that starts off emerald green then changes to brilliant blue. Travel to McLeod Plantation for a program that includes a fun dyeing activity using real indigo and 100 percent cotton cloth. Group will be planting an interpretive indigo crop and those who participate can take a plant home. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. March 9: Local Sea Kayak Trips: Morris Island Lighthouse Kayak Tour. 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Departing from the Folly River Boat Landing, the Morris Island Lighthouse will be on our horizon as we paddle with the dolphins to this amazing historical place. We’ll explore the beach and the Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve then catch the shuttle back. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $48/$40 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

March 9: Introduction to Climbing: Climbing 103: Climbing Movement at James Island County Park. 1-4 p.m. Climb smarter, not harder, as group covers the basics of climbing technique where small gains in technique lead to big gains in ability. You’ll learn better footwork, balance, body positioning and more. Age: 14 & up. Fee: $30/$25 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

March 10: Sea Kayak Instructional Classes: ACA Essentials of Kayak Touring-Level 2 at James Island County Park. 11 a.m.-4 p.m. This course is designed to teach beginners to paddle sea kayaks safely and enjoyably on lakes, calm ocean environments, and other flat-water settings. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $54/$45 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

March 10: Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Instructional Classes: Intro to SUP-Level 1 at James Island County Park. Noon-2 p.m. This class will get you started with instruction on safety and the proper paddling technique that will allow you to progress comfortably at your own pace. Age: 16 & up. March 10: Family Climbing: Family Belay Lesson at James Island County Park. 1-4 p.m. Children ages 4-13 will climb while parents learn to belay. Children ages 14 and up can learn to belay as well as climb. Age: 4 & up. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Fee: $18/$15 CCR Discount. March 13, 20, 27: College Days at James Island County Park. Noon-7 p.m. Students with a current ID will receive a free harness and shoe rental with the regular price of admission. Registration is not necessary. Fee: $10.

March 13, 29: After School Adventures: Archery at Palmetto Islands County Park. 4:30-6 p.m. Archery is an age old activity that has become a fast-growing sport for youth. Enjoy a fun afternoon while you learn safe practices of archery and get your chance to shoot a bull’s-eye. Age: 10-14. Fee: $6/$5 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

March 14: James Island Bird Walks at James Island County Park. 8:30-10:30 a.m. Birding experts will help identify and count songbirds, birds of prey, wading birds, and others found in the park’s diverse habitats. Registration is not required. A chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: Free.

March 15: Explore Your Parklands: Laurel Hill. 1-4:30 p.m. Pre-registration required for this guided tour. Amid increasing development east of the Cooper River, more than 700 acres of natural beauty have been preserved adjacent to Park West. From the ruins of the old plantation home to the surrounding forests, this property provides a peek into 18th- and 19th-century life in East Cooper. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $15/$12 CCR Discount.

March 16: Palmetto Pump & USA Climbing Competition at James Island County Park. 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Join group for annual competition in conjunction with USA Climbing. This nationally sanctioned event plays hosts to 60+ climbers from around the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern US. Compete, or just cheer for your local team. Space is limited so register early and save. Competitors who are not registered with USA Climbing will need to pay a $5 for a Day Membership in order to compete. Free to spectators. Participants ages 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult chaperon. Age: 4 & Up. Fee: $40 before March 4/$45 on or after March 4.

March 16: Canoe Programs: Intro to Canoeing at James Island County Park. 10 a.m.-noon. This the perfect craft for exploring the natural and cultural history of our Lowcountry environment. Learn basic strokes, safety and technique. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $24/$20 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

March 16: Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) Instructional Classes: Intermediate SUP-Level 2 at James Island County Park. 1-3 p.m. Take the next step in SUPing. March 17: Sea Kayak Instructional Classes: ACA Introduction to Kayaking-Level 1 at James Island County Park. 12:30-4:30 p.m. Using a variety of boats, this entry-level course teaches you the basic strokes and skills to have fun on the water/ Age: 16 & up. March 18-22: Kayak Rolling and Rescues: Introduction to Kayak Rolling. 7-8 p.m. Have you ever wanted to learn how to roll a kayak? Now is the time. March 19, 26: How to Belay at James Island County Park. 5:30-7 p.m. Learn to belay in this abbreviated version of our popular Introduction to Climbing class. Age: 14 & up. Fee: $18/$15 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

March 20: McLeod: Plantation to Park: Celebrating Native American History at McLeod. 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Pre-registration required for this guided tour. To better understand indigenous occupation, group will take a short nature walk to examine artifacts, historical replicas of tools and native edible/medicinal plants. Then make your own indigenous-style decorative clay beads to take home. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $9/$7 CCR Discount.

March 21: Master Naturalist Sampler: Naturalist Training at Palmetto Islands County Park. 9 a.m.-noon. The hummock islands and salt marshes of this park will let us study estuaries, ecotones and edge biodiversity, as well as flora and fauna identification. Age: 16 & up. March 22-24: ACA Instructor Certification Courses: L-2 Stand Up Paddleboard Instructor Certification Workshop at James Island County Park. 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. This workshop (IDW) with the certification exam (ICE) is for the ACA’s L-2 Basic Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) Instructor. This certification is for those teaching students in areas with mild winds and modest tidal currents. March 23: Introduction to Climbing: Climbing 101 at James Island County Park. 1-4 p.m. Learn gear, basic knots, technique and how to belay. March 23: Parent and Child Trips: Charleston Harbor Sea Kayak. 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Enjoy a tandem kayak excursion starting from Sunrise Park to nearby beaches with views of historical Fort Sumter. March 23: Canoeing At Caw Caw: Heritage to Habitat Canoe Tour at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Travel back to the age of rice with this interpretive canoe trip. March 23: Local Sea Kayak Trips: Fort Sumter and Beyond. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Departing from Demetre (Sunrise) Park, group will out with the tide and visit the fort. Weather permitting, group will head to Cummings Point on Morris Island for a little beach combing before paddling back with the tide. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $48/$40 CCR Discount. March 23: Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) Trips: Stono Marsh SUP Trip at James Island County Park. 1-4 p.m. Explore the marsh off the Stono River adjacent to James Island County Park. For your comfort and enjoyment, these trips are recommended to those who already have the basics of SUPing or have a moderate to high level of athleticism before signing up for a 3-hour tour. March 23: Intermediate Climbing Courses: Climbing 202: Intermediate Technique at James Island County Park. 1-4 p.m. Are you hitting a plateau in your climbing? This class will help you progress to the next level. Students should have a current CCPRC Climbing Wall Belay Card and be able to climb in the 5.9 range. Age: 14 & up. Fee: $33/$27 CCR Discount. March 24: Intermediate Climbing Courses: Climbing 201: Sport Climbing at James Island County Park. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Lead climbing, specifically sport climbing, is the next step after top roping. Skills covered include clipping, falling, belaying and more. Participants must have a current CCPRC Climbing Wall Belay Card and must be comfortable climbing 5.8 rated routes. Age: 14 & up. March 26: After School Adventures: Mountain Bike at Wannamaker County Park. 4-5:30 p.m. Though we do not have mountains in the Lowcountry, we will ride mountain bikes around the new trails at Wannamaker County Park and learn about shifting gears, safety, and equipment. Age: 13-16. Fee: $6/$5 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

March 26: After-Work Paddling Trips: Charleston Harbor from Demetre (Sunrise) Park at off-site location. 5:30-8 p.m. As we watch the sun set and catch the nearly full moonrise, we’ll paddle with the tide through Charleston Harbor. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $36/$30 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

March 27: Night Climbing at James Island County Park. 7-10 p.m. Try your favorite route from a different perspective. Equipment is not included in climbing fee. Bring your own headlamp/flashlight. Registration is not necessary. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $12/$10 CCR Discount.

March 28: Birding Trips: Francis Marion Foray. 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Enjoy the day scouting with birding professionals for hawks, shorebirds, warblers, woodpeckers and other birds of the Francis Marion National Forest and Cape Romain’s Garris Landing. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $21/$17 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

March 30: Family Outdoor Adventure Sampler: Canoe and SUP Sampler at Palmetto Islands County Park. 9 a.m.-noon. Whether sitting in a canoe or standing on a paddleboard there is something for everyone. Join group for a hands-on experience that is sure to be fun for the whole family. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 6 & up. Fee: $18/$15 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

March 30: Canoe Programs: Long Savannah Interpretive Canoe Tour. 12:30-5:30 p.m. Explore one of the most remote sites in our local area. Paddle from Bulow Boat Landing and head north among the old rice fields that once covered the area, then circle back down with the tide. With its remoteness, and the help of an interpretive guide, this trip is sure to offer some wonderful wildlife sightings. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $46/$38 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

March 30: Intermediate Climbing Courses: Climbing 204: Top Rope Anchors at James Island County Park. 1-4 p.m. If you plan to take your climbing to real rock, this is a great course to learn all the basics of top rope anchor building.
