Coll. of Charleston 6, UNC Wilmington 5
MOUNT PLEASANT — College of Charleston scored three runs in the ninth, beating UNC Wilmington, 6-5, on a walk-off hit-by-pitch RBI from Cody Martin.
With the Cougars (7-5) trailing the Seahawks (6-6) by two, Gunnar Heidt hit a one-out single. Carl Wise walked and Ryan Welke followed with an RBI single. Brandon Murray’s RBI double tied it, and after an intentional walk to Bradley Goodson, Ricky Holden hit Martin on a 2-2 count to score pinch-runner Lorenzo Wright.
Ryan West (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, finishing the game with 41/3 IP and four hits allowed, including a solo home run in the top of the ninth game that extended UNCW’s lead to 5-3. West made a season-high five strikeouts.
CofC starter Blake Ross made his first career start and pitched well, scattering three hits and striking out three through four innings. Reliever Jimmy Revan allowed four runs on four hits in the top of the fifth, but West came in and got the Cougars out of the inning with no more damage.
UNCW reliever Kelly Secrest (1-1) was tagged with the loss as he gave up four runs, three earned, and allowed all of the base runners in the ninth inning.
Four different Cougars had multi-hit games as CofC tallied 12 team hits. Heidt hit his fourth double of the season and his ninth-inning single started the comeback rally. Goodson and Martin each had two hits and scored a run, and Welke picked up two hits and an RBI.
Corey Dick led the Seahawks with a 3-for-5 day, registering three RBIs including a solo home run in the ninth inning.
College of Charleston will play at Charleston Southern at 2 p.m. today.
