CLEMSON — The atmosphere for Clemson football’s season opener on Aug. 31 was already expected to be electric as both Clemson and Georgia will likely be ranked in the top 10 of preseason polls. And that atmosphere will only be enhanced by an 8 p.m. kickoff time (WCIV-TV/ABC), which was announced Tuesday.
South Carolina will host North Carolina at 6 p.m. on Aug. 29 (ESPN) to begin its season, a kickoff time that was also announced Tuesday.
Clemson and Georgia haven’t met since 2003 despite being separated by less than 100 miles. The two programs played some legendary games in the early 1980s. Clemson defeated Georgia and star running back Herschel Walker in 1981 en route to a national championship.
North Carolina and South Carolina have not met since 2007.
North Carolina holds a 34-17-4 lead in the all-time series, but South Carolina has won four of the last five contests.
South Carolina has played 10 Thursday night ESPN contests since 2005. The Gamecocks are 8-2 in Thursday night games under Steve Spurrier, including a 5-1 record at home.
