Tennessee took advantage of a seven-run fifth inning in staying undefeated on the opening day of the Charleston Southern Buccaneer Invitational as the Volunteers defeated host Charleston Southern on Friday afternoon at the CSU Softball Field, 8-1.

The Buccaneers pushed across their lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Hayes Holdsworth brought in Jasmine Conley on an infield groundout, sending the teams into the seventh frame, but the CSU (3-8) comeback ended there as the Volunteers (16-3) held on for the win.

Jennifer Giles (1-6) suffered the loss, carrying a no-hitter into the third inning before struggling to escape the fifth inning in giving up eight runs — six earned.

Dane Kelly scored two goals and Quinton Griffith added another as the Charleston Battery defeated the College of Charleston, 3-0, in a preseason exhibition match Thursday.

The Battery will travel to Clemson today to take on the Tigers at 3 p.m.
