SUMTER, S.C. -- Police say a Sumter woman was shot and killed while trying to break up a fight in front of her home.

Deputy Chief Alvin Holston says officers found 54-year-old Patricia Singleton lying in her front yard Wednesday night.

Holston says Singleton had been shot in the chest and later died at a hospital. Authorities say they think Singleton was trying to break up a fight when she was shot.

Early Thursday, police arrested 18-year-old Derek Antwan Darby and charged him with murder. Police records show Singleton and Darby were neighbors.

Darby was jailed awaiting a bond hearing. It wasn’t known if he had an attorney.
