One person was killed and another hospitalized after two vehicles crashed into a fallen tree in Berkeley County, Highway Patrol troopers said.
Shortly before 5 a.m., a 1997 Chevrolet pickup truck crashed into a large tree that fell at State and Lebanon roads, Highway Patrol Sgt. Bob Beres said. The vehicle’s driver was not wearing a seat belt and was killed in the wreck, he said.
Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury identified the person killed as 34-year-old Gregory President, of Ridgeville.
President was pronounced dead at the scene, Salisbury said
A 2003 Honda CRV also crashed into the fallen tree about 5 a.m. Beres identified that vehicle’s driver as Helen Schuette of Summerville.
Paramedics transported Schuette to Medical University Hospital for treatment, he said.
A third wreck occurred when a Pine Ridge Fire Department pickup truck backed into a Honda at the scene, Beres said.
No charges will be filed in that collision, he said.
State Department of Transportation crews removed the tree from road this morning.
Police diverted traffic away from the area as the wreck was cleared, Beres said.
