Richland County guard accused of assault of inmate
COLUMBIA — A jail guard in Richland County has been arrested and accused of assaulting an inmate.
Thirty-seven-year-old Robin Smith is accused of stomping on an inmate who had been booked on a trespassing charge earlier this month.
Smith is charged with aggravated assault and battery. It was unclear if he has a lawyer.
Smith had worked at the jail two years. County spokeswoman Stephany Snowden says he was fired Monday.
Sheriff Leon Lott said the inmate had refused to comply with jailers’ instructions.
Deputies accuse Smith of repeatedly kicking the inmate’s head and side, then putting a boot on the inmate’s head and neck while pulling his arm in the opposite direction.
Deputies learned about the attack from hospital officials. The inmate was in critical but stable condition.
