Beaufort County moves on $45 million interchange
HILTON HEAD ISLAND — Despite opposition from Hilton Head Island officials, Beaufort County is going ahead with plans to build a $45 million interchange at the entrance to the resort island.
Hilton Head Town Council last week voted against the U.S. 278 interchange saying it would destroy views at the entrance to the island.
But the Island Packet of Hilton Head reports http://bit.ly/Waldso that Beaufort County Council voted Monday to award contracts to a Kentucky firm and a Columbia company to handle construction.
County Councilman Steve Baer said the county will be glad it approved the work as traffic continues to increase.
The work consists of building flyover bridges linking U.S. 278 to the Bluffton Parkway on the mainland. Hilton Head council members complain the bridges will destroy the view of water and marsh.
