Three relatives of a Ridgeville man who was shot to death earlier this month have been arrested.
Jimmy C. Edwards, 64, was found shot to death outside his house at 374 Ridge Road about 11 p.m. Feb. 1. Three relatives who lived with him were charged in his death Monday and booked into the Dorchester County jail.
Sonny Ray Jones Jr., 37, whose mother is Edwards’ stepdaughter, faces charges of murder, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
Jones’ mother, Mary Todd Grooms, 54, and her husband, Endsley P. Grooms, 67, are each charged with murder.
Edwards was shot three times in the back of his head with a small-caliber handgun around 11 p.m. Feb. 1, according to investigators.
Endsley and Mary Grooms told The Post and Courier a few days after the slaying that they were watching television when Edwards returned home. They figured he would check on his chickens in a backyard coop before walking inside.
Endsley Grooms said he heard what he thought were fireworks, while Mary Grooms said she heard nothing. Jones was taking a shower at the time, they said.
Endsley Grooms said he later went outside to check on Edwards and found him dead.
Jones is expected to appear during a bond hearing this afternoon, when more details are expected to be released.
