Man charged after 5-month-old boy hospitalized with fractured skull

Hanahan police on Friday arrested a man after a 5-month-old boy was hospitalized in critical condition with a fractured skull.

Derek Allan Stilson, 23, of Murray Drive, is accused of throwing his son onto the living room floor when he wouldn’t stop crying, an affidavit states. He was charged with infliction of great bodily injury upon a child, Hanahan Police Lt. Michael Fowler said.

Stilson’s son was transported to Medical University Hospital on Thursday with a fractured skull and bleeding and swelling on the brain, Fowler said. The child is still at the hospital in critical condition and has been placed in protective custody, he said.

A judge on Saturday set Stilson’s bail at $250,000 bail. He is being held at the Berkeley County jail.
