The man accused of gunning down another man at the Chase Lounge Thursday night has surrendered, Colleton County sheriff’s deputies said.
Larry Henderson, Jr., 49, of Hill Street in Walterboro called deputies and told them he was waiting behind his house to turn himself in on charges of murder and and possession of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime, Chief Deputy Ted Stanfield said. He was arrested without incident.
Henderson is accusing of killing 52-year-old Leon Cockrum, Jr.
Deputies responded to a reported shooting at the nightclub, located just outside Walterboro at 1002 Proctor St., at 8:38 p.m.
Deputies found Cockrum inside with multiple gunshot wounds. He was flown to the Medical University Hospital where he died about 3 a.m., Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey said.
Stanfield declined to release an incident report.
It was the second shooting at the nightclub this year and the second fatal shooting since September. Four people have been shot in all over that span.
Stanfield said there have been no discussions with the county about revoking the club’s business license. Thursday’s was the first shooting recently that actually happened inside the club and Stanfield said club officials were cooperative with deputies.
On the heels of the shooting, 14th Circuit Solicitor Duffie Stone said he will announce a new strategy to prosecute gun violence throughout his five-county district on Monday in front of the Colleton County Courthouse in Walterboro.
Anyone with information about Henderson’s whereabouts is asked to call the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office at (843) 549-1203.
