A suspect has been arrested in connection with Monday’s hit-and-run wreck that killed Kingstree High School girls’ basketball coach Sonya Burgess, authorities said.
S.C. Highway Patrol Senior Trooper Bridget Wyant said Daveline Leshon Holmes is charged with reckless homicide and leaving the scene of a collision involving death.
Bail for the 37-year-old Georgetown woman was set at $115,000 Wednesday, according to Williamsburg County records.
The wreck occurred 4 miles south of Lake City on U.S. Highway 52 at about 6:30 p.m. Monday.
Holmes’ vehicle left a convenience store on Highway 52 and failed to yield to a sport-utility vehicle driven by Burgess, 39, Wyant said. Burgess then overcorrected, which caused the 1999 Ford Expedition she was driving to flip, she said.
Burgess was ejected from the Ford and subsequently struck by another vehicle, Wyant said. Both Holmes and the driver of the other vehicle left the scene of the collision, she said.
The Highway Patrol and its Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) worked with Sidney’s One Stop convenience store at Highway 52 and S.C. Highway 512 to obtain surveillance video, Wyant said.
Photos of the person and a vehicle of interest connected to the wreck were distributed by the Highway Patrol and helped lead to the arrest, she said.
The MAIT unit is continuing to investigate the collision, and additional charges could be filed in the case, Wyant said.
Three minors were traveling with Burgess when the wreck occurred. Wyant said. Paramedics transported them to Williamsburg Regional Hospital for treatment.
Burgess was pronounced dead at the scene, Williamsburg County Coroner Harrison McKnight said. The three minors who were with her were treated and released, he said.
