Many years after the Soviet Union built a big wall through Berlin, during the Cold War, President Ronald Reagan stood before that wall and famously demanded that it be torn down.

North Charleston is contemplating something similar, though less geopolitical in its implications.

The city is proposing new rules for fences, with proposed regulations about heights and materials, such as requiring that front-yard and corner-lot fences be no taller than 4 feet. If the ordinance is approved, existing fences that violate the new rules could remain in place for 5 years.

After that, the city could say: Mr. Homeowner, tear down this fence.

The ordinance is scheduled for review tonight when the city’s Planning Commission meets at 6 p.m. in North Charleston City Hall.
