Driver hits two patrol cars in latest I-526 wreck

A driver on Interstate 526 lost control today and hit Charleston police cars on the Westmoreland Bridge that takes traffic between West Ashley and North Charleston.

Neither officer was hurt, and the driver was not given a ticket, according to Senior Trooper Bridget Wyant.

It was the latest in a rash of wrecks in the last couple weeks on interstates 526 and 26.

Two officers pulled their patrol cars behind a disabled car on the bridge when another driver lost control, hit the wall and bounced off both patrol cars, Wyant said. The incident was reported at 3:22 p.m.

Another wreck was reported nearby about the same time. The other wreck, also without injuries, was on I-526 west and Ashley River Road, according to the Highway Patrol.

North Charleston police were out in force this morning cracking down on speeders on I-526.

Officers issued 238 traffic citations between 6 a.m. and noon in both lanes, police spokesman Spencer Pryor said.

Most of the citations, 165, were for speeding but also included seat belt violations, driver’s license restrictions and other non-moving violations, Pryor said. One arrest was made for a stolen license plate.

The enforcement was not a response to the recent wrecks, since North Charleston police have been conducting periodic crackdowns on I-526 for some time, Pryor said.
