A Summerville man died when his pickup truck ran into an 18-wheeler on U.S. Highway 78 this morning.
Charles Rearick, 66, of Louise Street was pronounced dead at the scene, Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet said.
Rearick was driving a gold Chevy S10 on Highway 78 toward Summerville when he crossed the center line and ran into the 18-wheeler about 2.4 miles west of Ridgeville, Nisbet said.
An autopsy is scheduled to see if a possible medical condition caused the wreck.
Rearick was not wearing a seat belt, according to the Highway Patrol.
The tractor-trailer driver swerved to try to avoid the pickup in his lane and overturned in a ditch, spilling a load of corn. The tractor-trailer driver was wearing a seat belt and was taken to Trident Medical Center for treatment, according to the report.
The incident happened shortly after 9 a.m. The section of U.S. 78 near U.S. 178 was closed for several hours afterward.
