Clemson notes: Napier named assistant coach at Florida State, early enrollees look to make immediate impact

CLEMSON — Former Clemson offensive coordinator Billy Napier will be back on the sidelines in the Atlantic Division this fall. Florida State announced Tuesday he will become the program’s new tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator.

It appears to be a good fit for Napier, who returns to the Southeast, a region he knows well as a Georgia native and former Furman quarterback. Napier had been the quarterbacks coach at Colorado State.

Napier was promoted by Dabo Swinney to be Clemson’s offensive coordinator in 2009. At 29, he was the youngest coodinator in the ACC. Napier was fired after the 2010 season because of Clemson’s inept offensive performance.

Clemson welcomes four early enrollees:

Four-star rated defensive ends Shaq Lawson and Ebenezer Ogundeko are among the four early enrollees who are now taking class at Clemson and will compete in spring practice.

Lawson was rated as the top prep school prospect in the country, playing last fall at Hargrave Military.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Daniel High product is thought to be able to crack the defensive end rotation as a freshman. Clemson has one starting spot to fill following the graduation of Malliciah Goodman.

Ogundeko is a U.S. Army All-American who is a quick but undersized end.

The other signees include Jadar Johnson, a 6-1 defensive back from Orangeburg, and tight end Jordan Leggett, the No. 5 tight end in the class by ESPN.com.

Clemson has 12 other commitments for its 2013 class. Coach Dabo Swinney hopes to sign between 21 and 24 players.
