SUMMERVILLE — A man accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl on a popular trail last week is in police custody.
Michael Glen Evans, 20, of Summerville was arrested Monday and charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, Capt. Jon Rogers said.
During a bond hearing today in Summerville Municipal Court, a magistrate denied bail. Evans is being held in the Dorchester County jail.
His arrest was based on tips after police released a composite sketch of the suspect, Rogers said.
A 17-year-old girl told police she was sexually assaulted about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday on the Sawmill Branch Walk/Bike Trail behind the SCE&G power station near Bacons Bridge Road.
Several witnesses confirmed her report, including one who saw the assault and caused the attacker to flee. Officers noted cuts and bruises on her face, according to the incident report.
The girl said she was running on the trail when a young man jumped off a bicycle, pulled out a pocketknife, punched her in the face three times, forced her into a wooded area and sexually assaulted her while holding the knife to her throat, according to the police report.
