Colleton County officials are working to identify a man who was thrown from a pickup in a fiery wreck on Saturday night.

The pickup truck was traveling on Sniders Highway when the vehicle ran off the road, struck a power pole and caught fire shortly before 10:30 p.m., Colleton County Fire and Rescue Director Barry McRoy said.

The wreck happened near the 4,000 block of Cane Street, McRoy said.

The vehicle was fully engulfed when authorities arrived, but no one was inside, McRoy said.

Witnesses reported seeing someone running from the vehicle after the wreck. That person has not been found, McRoy said.

Colleton County Sheriff’s deputies searched the nearby woods with thermal imaging cameras and found an unconscious man about 35 feet from the vehicle. McRoy said the man appeared to have been ejected.

Authorities transported the man to Medical University Hospital by helicopter. McRoy did not know the status of the man’s condition Monday.

The man, who did not have on any identification, has been listed as a John Doe, McRoy said.
