Man killed trying to repossess truck in Sumter
SUMTER — Sumter County sheriff’s deputies are investigating the shooting death of a man who was trying to repossess a truck.
Chief Deputy Hampton Gardner says 45-year-old Todd Showell of Lee County was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon.
Gardner says Showell and another man arrived at the Sumter home looking for a pickup truck.
Deputies say 81-year-old Alton Shelley came out of the home with a handgun.
Investigators say a truck in front of the home was not the vehicle the men were seeking and they drove away. Investigators say Shelley fired several times, killing Showell. Investigators say the truck the men wanted was behind the home.
Shelley is charged with murder and aggravated assault. It was not clear if he has an attorney.
