COLUMBIA ó Gov. Nikki Haley has nominated a Georgia native with more than 40 years experience in the insurance industry to lead the S.C. Department of Insurance.
Ray Farmer, who is leaving the private sector to take the job, ultimately will have to be confirmed by the S.C. Senate.
The Insurance Department has been led by an interim director for 11 months following the abrupt resignation of David Black last December after less than a year on the job.
Haley explained today that the long wait for a new insurance leader was due to the fact she didnít want to settle when it came to naming a director of a Cabinet agency.
She also said a number of prospective nominees from the insurance industry turned down the administration after learning how much the post would pay.
