The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal wreck that happened on U.S. Highway 78 in Dorchester County Wednesday night.

The wreck happened near Ridgeville Road about 9:45 p.m., Lance Cpl. Judd Jones said.

Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet identified the driver as Debra R. Ross, 45. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ross was headed west in a 2004 Suzuki sport-utility vehicle when it ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a drain culvert, Jones said.

Ross, was wearing a seat belt and was the only person in the vehicle, Jones said.

Ross did not hit the brakes during the wreck, and is known to have fallen asleep while driving in the past, Nisbet said.

Ross died from blunt force trauma to the chest, but toxicology tests are being performed, Nisbet said.
