Storyteller Forest to appear at church

Circular Congregational Church will host storyteller Heather Forest for a free evening of music, poetry and fables. “Songspinner: A Concert of Musical Folktales” is scheduled for 7 p.m. today in the sanctuary of Circular, 150 meeting St.

Forest will share fables, fairy tales and ancient stories of adventure and enchantment. Sponsored by the S.C. Storytelling Network, this is one of several free prefestival programs planned by the Charleston County Public Library in advance of the inaugural Charleston Tells Storytelling Festival on March 8-9. Book to be launched at Library Society

The Charleston Library Society is hosting a book launch 6-8 p.m. Thursday for Sheridan Hough, whose will talk about and sign copies of her debut novel, “Mirror’s Fathom,” published by Mercer University Press. The event at 164 King St. is free.

“Mirror’s Fathom” is the story of Tycho Wilhelm Lund, anarchist, pirate, thief of a legendary mirror and a great-nephew of Soren Kierkegaard. The novel is a philosophical mystery set in the 19th and 21st centuries.

Hough is a professor of philosophy at the College of Charleston, poet and writer.

Author to discuss book on measuring heavens

Middleton Place Foundation presents a lecture and book signing by British author Andrea Wulf, who will discuss her latest book, “Chasing Venus: The Race to Measure the Heavens.”

A cocktail reception will precede the lecture. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Edmondston-Alston House, 21 East Battery. The event will take place in candlelit drawing rooms on the second floor of the historic house. Wulf’s illustrated lecture will address the first global scientific collaboration that called on scientists across the world, including here in Charleston, to unite despite political, geographical and intellectual boundaries.

Mt. Pleasant author to sign copies of book

Cindy Hanson, a Mount Pleasant resident and author of “A Mighty Eagle: A Beloved Bird, the Search for True Love,” will sign copies of her book at 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Nov. 9 and 10 at Charleston’s Holiday Market and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Charleston Area Convention Center, 5001 Coliseum Drive, North Charleston.

“A Mighty Eagle” is the story of a lost bird searching for true love and family. The story follows the bird’s joys and difficulties, and its encounters with characters from fairy tales, musicals and books. It’s appropriate for young readers.

Library fundraiser to feature private art

The Friends of the Summerville Library is hosting an evening of art and music 7-10 p.m. Nov. 9 at Art and Soul Place, 113 South 2nd St. West.

The “night at the art museum,” a fundraiser for the organization, will present Summerville resident Robert Seay’s private collection of more than 60 graphics and prints. Artists featured include Picasso, Whistler, Goya, Chagall, Matisse, Miro, Dali and others.
