Dr. Joseph Flummerfelt announced today that he will step down as Spoleto Festival USA’s Artistic Director for Choral Activities after the 2013 Festival season.
Flummerfelt has been with the international performing arts festival since its beginning. He also served as chorus master of the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy, from 1971 through 1993, and has served with Spoleto Festival USA since its inception in 1977.
Flummerfelt retired from leading the Westminster Choir in 2004, but continued to direct programming and lead choral productions with Spoleto Festival USA.
Flummerfelt will conduct the Westminster Choir, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus, and the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra in a farewell performance of Verdi’s powerful “Requiem” on June 6, 2013.
The announcement was made at the festival’s annual board meeting today.
