Nation’s No. 1 prospect and Clemson commitment Robert Nkemdiche being pulled toward Ole Miss
CLEMSON – Robert Nkemdiche, a Clemson commitment and the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect in the Class of 2013, remains committed to the Tigers but noted in an interview with Rivals.com there is some pressure coming from within his family to consider Ole Miss.
The 6-foot-5, 270-pound defensive end’s brother, Denzel, plays at Ole Miss and said his mother, Beverly, wants her sons to play together.
This interview follows an ESPN story earlier this year where his mother said she was “unhappy” with Clemson and that she felt he was “pressured” into committing to Clemson. Of course, how closely his mother has been involved in the process is unclear because she has spent much of the year in Nigeria where she is a legislator. Nkemdiche’s father works as a doctor in the Atlanta suburbs.
In the interview, Nkemdiche said he is still committed to Clemson but his mother holds some influence in his decision making.
Nkemdiche referred to Clemson as a “family school” and likes how the Tigers talked about other things than football in his recruiting process.
The other thing working in Clemson’s favor is that two of Nkemdiche’s Grayson (Ga.) High teammates and closest friends – Wayne Gallman and David Kamara – have committed to play for Clemson.
If Nkemdiche sticks to his commitment he will be the third No. 1 overall prospect to sign with an in-state school since 2008, joining fellow defensive ends Da’Quan Bowers (Clemson) in 2008 and Jadeveon Clowney (South Carolina) in 2011.
Nkemdiche told ESPN earlier this year his commitment to Clemson is solid: “I’m going to Clemson. I want to make an impact and in three years go to the NFL. That’s what I’m going to do. You can put that in bold too.”
Virginia Tech game time set:
Clemson will host Virginia Tech at 12 p.m. on Oct. 20. The game will be televised on ESPN or ESPN2. The 12 p.m. start will be the earliest starting time of the year for Clemson this season, a time slot that is not popular with many Clemson fans.
Clemson is ranked three slots higher, No. 13, in the coaches poll than the AP poll and remember the AP poll is no longer used in the BCS standings … The Clemson players will be off Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week during their bye.
