What started as an argument early Sunday morning inside a West Ashley restaurant ended as a gunbattle in the parking lot. One man was killed and another seriously injured.
Charleston County sheriff’s deputies were called to the Waffle House at 3536 Savannah Highway near Main Road at 4:13 a.m. and found two males in the parking lot who had been shot.
Dontaye Reed, 19, from Ravenel was taken by Charleston County EMS to Medical University Hospital, where he died shortly thereafter from a gunshot wound, according to Charleston County Deputy Coroner Kelly Kraus.
Another man had life-threatening injuries, and a third-person suffered minor injuries from a fall inside the restaurant, according to a news release from sheriff’s Maj. Jim Brady. The injured were transported to a hospital.
According to witnesses, an altercation began inside, then spilled outside and into the parking lot. Shots were exchanged between people inside and a shooter outside.
Waffle House closed for several hours but was back open by 2 p.m. An employee who answered the phone did not want to comment. The shooter outside the building was described as a black male with dreadlocks who was wearing a red shirt. Deputies did not know if he left in a vehicle or on foot.
Anyone with information about the shooting should call the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office at 202-1700 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
