USC’s head coach Ray Tanner goes with the hot hand: Adam Matthews will hit clean-up vs. Oklahoma tonight
COLUMBIA - In a bit of surprise and on a hunch, South Carolina head baseball coach Ray Tanner has put senior Adam Matthews in the clean-up spot for the Gamecocks’ Super Regional opener against Oklahoma tonight.
Matthews, the USC right fielder, is batting only .241. He has hit fourth in the order only once previously all season (0-for-4 vs. Florida in an SEC Tournament game). But Matthews has been sizzling at the plate lately and was named Most Valuable Player of the Columbia Regional last week. He has 13 hits in his last 33 at-bats.
Game time at Carolina Stadium for the first game in a best-of-three series is 8 p.m.
