Robert Smalls legacy will be remembered this weekend

The Planter, run out of Charleston by Robert Smalls in May 1862. Copied at the Avery Institute. Charleston-based Global Marine Ltd. plans to salvage the Confederate vessel the Planter, pictured at right, which was seized in 1862 by a group of slaves led by Robert Smalls, at left, and delivered to the Union. The company also plans a book and movie about the salvage operation. In 1862, Robert Smalls commandeered the Confederate boat, the Planter, then surrendered to the Union. Robert Smalls was working aboard the Confederate ship, the Planter in 1862 when he led one of the most daring slave escapes of all time.
