Charleston County sheriff’s deputy charged with DUI after crash on Interstate 526 at U.S. 17

A Charleston County sheriff’s deputy was charged with DUI early Sunday following a crash on Interstate 526 at U.S. Highway 17.

Charleston police responded to the wreck at 2:30 a.m. No one was injured, police spokesman Charles Francis said.

Police arrested and charged Deputy Nicholas Wagner, 37, with 1st offense DUI, sheriff’s Maj. James Brady said. He was taken to the Charleston County Detention Center.

Brady said Wagner was off-duty and driving a personal vehicle at the time of the wreck. He has been placed on administrative leave without pay.

An incident report was expected to be released Monday.
