Summerville softball advances to Lower State semifinals
SUMMERVILLE — Summerville High School rallied in dramatic fashion Wednesday night to defeat South Florence, 11-9, and claim the District 8 title and a berth in the Class AAAA Lower State semifinals.
The Green Wave (27-3) will take on Wando for a spot in the Lower State state championship series.
Down 9-6 heading to the seventh inning, Summerville scored five times to take the lead. Summer Jenkins drove in one run to start the rally, and Hannah Horton’s two-run double tied the game. After two walks, Sarah Windham’s two-run double made it 11-9.
South Florence got two runners in the bottom of the inning on before Taylor Wuerfel ended the threat for Summerville.
“It was a heck of a night,” said coach Heather Tucker. “We never gave up after we dug ourselves quite a hole. And the good thing is, now we know no matter how far we get down, we know we can come back.
“Wando is a good team and we’ll have to play our A game and see what happens.”
Summerville needed two games to get the job done Wednesday. South Florence took the first one, 9-8, in nine innings to force a second game in the double-elimination tournament.
The Green Wave beat South Aiken, 8-0, in the opening game and knocked off South Florence, 13-4, on Saturday.
