Murder charge filed in January killing
Demeatrius Raynard Smalls was charged Friday with murder in the San Miguel Road homicide in which 27-year-old Kentrell Samuel was killed in January 2012.
Smalls was initially charged with obstruction of justice when in January police accused two people of concealing information about the shooting death.
Smalls, 24, of Jenkins Avenue in North Charleston, and Robert Ramone Fields Jr., 24, of Hazelwood Drive in Charleston, both faced charges of obstruction of justice, according to police.
According to arrest warrants, the two men told detectives that they were not in the neighborhood on the night of the crime. But later, witnesses told the police that they saw Smalls and Fields in a gray car as it sped away from the crime scene after the fatal shot was fired.
People with information about the Jan. 5 fatal shooting should call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111 or police at 577-7434.
