COLUMBIA — Adam Matthews hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning to lead South Carolina to a 1-0 victory over Alabama on Friday in the completion of a game that was halted after seven innings on Thursday because of a thunderstorm.

It only took 18 minutes for the Gamecocks (32-11, 13-7 SEC) to earn the win.

As dramatic as that was, Friday’s regularly scheduled game was just as dramatic.

On Thursday, through the first seven innings, the game belonged all to South Carolina starting pitcher Michael Roth and Alabama starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull.

Roth limited the Tide to just four hits in seven innings of work with two strikeouts and three walks.

Turnbull hurled seven innings of no-hit ball while walking four and striking out five.

With his appearance in the opener, Matt Price set a school for career appearances with 89 in his career passing the previous mark of 88 set by Rob Mosser (1990-93).
