Fire destroys two homes on Dewees Island, damages at least two more
DEWEES ISLAND - Fire leveled two homes and damaged at least two more on this tiny island community Tuesday night.
The fire was first reported about 9 p.m. and was extinguished within a couple of hours with the help of fire crews that arrived by boat. There is no bridge to the island.
Firefighters from the Isle of Palms, Mount Pleasant, Awendaw and other locations joined the Dewees department in battling the large fire, Tucker said.
Linda Tucker, city administrator for the Isle of Palms, said city watercraft and those from Charleston County and the town of Mount Pleasant ferried firefighters to Dewees all night.
“You can see the fire from the beaches at the Isle of Palms,” she said. Tucker said she has not been to Dewees but judging from the long-range view, the fire appears to be on the waterfront there.
Tucker said there are some hydrants on Dewees but that water supply is reported to be limited. It’s also windy on the beach, further fueling the fires, she said.
