Charleston Riverdogs score four in ninth inning to win 4-3

The Charleston RiverDogs scored four runs in the ninth inning against West Virginia to overcome a 3-0 deficit and win their eighth in a row, 4-3, Sunday at Riley Park.

The dramatic victory completed a four-game sweep of the Power and theRiverDogsimproved to 13-3 on the season.

The rally started when Tyler Austin led off the inning with his fourth home run of the season, which also extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Back-to-back walks followed against West Virginia’s Emmanuel De Leon (1-2) and a single by Cito Culver then loaded the bases.

After a strikeout, Francisco Arcia singled to center, scoring two runs and tying the game. After another walk loaded the bases again, Ben Gamel hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Culver with the game winning run.

“This is a fun team to manage,” said RiverDogs manager Carlos Mendoza. “They never give up.”

The Power scored the game’s first run in the top of second when Junior Sosa drilled an RBI triple to left-center off starter Jose Campos. They went up 2-0 in the fourth when Jose Osuna singled, moved to third on a hit-and-run single and scored on an error. The Power added an insurance run in the seventh against reliever Dan Mahoney.

Ballpark fun
“Bark for Your Brew” allowed fans who got to the ballpark early tosample various craft beers from all over the country. The event was sponsored by Fetch Doggy Day Care and benefitted Canines for Veterans. Fetch Doggy Day Care also presented the second Dog Day of the year.

Coming up
After a day off, the RiverDogs hit the road again on Tuesday for a seven-game road trip in Lexington and Hickory.
