Senate Finance to take up SC budget for 2012-13
COLUMBIA – Pay raises for state workers and more money for special needs students are among the topics that senators will consider as they write the state’s spending plan.
It’s budget week in the Senate Finance Committee. The Senate’s budget-writing committee will begin meeting Tuesday afternoon.
The House’s $6.5 billion proposal for the fiscal year that starts July 1 includes a 2 percent pay raise for most state workers.
Democratic Sen. Darrell Jackson of Columbia has said he’ll fight to increase that to 4 percent, saying 2 percent is not enough after three years with no raise.
Education Superintendent Mick Zais has asked senators to add $36 million to the budget for special education services, after the federal education agency denied his request to again delay a funding cut.
