Charleston County School District plans historic public exhibit on equalization schools at new Charleston Progressive Academy
Courtney old- Rebekah Dobrasko stumbled upon a piece of unexplored South Carolina history while working on her master´s degree in public history. She learned the state passed its first general sales tax in 1951 to fund “equalizationÓ schools, or buildings that would show “separate but equalÓ could work. Although the state would pour $214 million into more than 700 new schools to reinforce its commitment to segregation, it´s a lesser-known piece of South Carolina history.
