A Friday afternoon fire heavily damaged the upper floor of a two-story, three-apartment residential structure at Folly Beach.

No one was injured in the fire at 816 East Ashley Avenue, but all three rental apartments in the building were damaged, Sgt. Kevin Burkel of the Folly Beach Public Safety Department said. He said the cause of the fire in under investigation.

Firefighters were called at 2:55 p.m. and arrived three minutes later. The second floor was already heavily involved with smoke and fire when the first firefighters arrived, Burkel said.

He said the city of Charleston and the James Island Public Service District fire departments sent vehicles and personnel to assist. “It took about 18 to 20 minutes to knock down the fire,” he said.

Burkel said firefighters “were able to salvage “quite a bit of the property of renters” in spite of the smoke, fire and water damage to the building.
