Food bank demands rise
Nanette Basden (left), volunteer coordinator for the Lowcountry Food Bank, updates records while reclamation manager Robert Wilson (on forklift) moves supplies to their proper place in the food bank warehouse on Azalea Drive. The boxes say 'diapers,' but that may not necessarily be what's in them.
Carolyn White sorts through boxes at the Lowcountry Food Bank for items that can meet the needs of the 'Hollywood Collaboration,' a consortium of 37 churches in St. Paul's Parish. The five-year-old consortium brings food to churches that redistribute it.
Jermaine Husser, executive director of the Lowcountry Food Bank, leads a tour of the food bank's 60,000-square-foot warehouse at 2864 Azalea Drive. The warehouse is much larger than the one the food bank left last November, but with area needs growing, the warehouse might need to be filled to capacity within a few years, Husser said.
